Periodontitis - loosening of the teeth - is a disease that affects the supporting tissues that surround and support your tooth. The destruction of these tissues can lead to mobility and then the loss of the tooth. There are several stages of gum disease.

The initial stage is gingivitis. It affects only the gums and is characterized by inflammation: the gums bleed, are red and swollen.

If gingivitis is not treated, the inflammation can spread and reach the bone. The bone surrounds your teeth and holds them in place on the jaw.
If nothing is done, the bone, ligaments and all the other tissues that support and surround your teeth are gradually destroyed and can lead to the loss of one or more teeth.
This is called periodontitis.

Several factors contribute to the development of periodontal disease:

• Poor dental hygiene
• Weak immune system, stress
• Hereditary factors
• Smoking
• Certain medications

 Here are the signs of periodontal disease:

• Bad breath
• Tender, red and swollen gums
• Bleeding gums
• Mobile teeth
• Loose teeth
